The High-Speed Internal Combustion Engine by Harry R. Ricardo, F.R.S., revised by H.S. Glyde Xeroxback - 434 pages, Third edition, 1941 The original resource for all things internal combustion. My copy is a scan of the 1941 edition, which is missing a bunch of the water injection sections that were written during WWII and published in the 1953 edition. If you can find a 1953 printing, let me know I want to make a copy of it. |
Engine Dynamics and Crankshaft Design by Glenn D. Angle Xeroxback - 299 pages, 1925 Simmons-Boardman Publishing Company Lots of good basics, but the lack of computing machinery in the 1920s causes Angle to spend an inordinate amount of time on various approximation techniques to avoid computing values for trig functions. Cool sections on computing summary forces and reactions, inertial damping with flywheels and balance, but I still can't find where he discusses rocking moments in inline motors. |
Valve Gear Design by Michael Charles Turkish Xeroxback - 434 pages, First edition, 1946 Eaton Manufacturing Company, Wilcox-Rich Division This is another scan of a book from the classic era. It has lots of good basic information about lobe generation and geometry, but the presentation is very jumbled. There are many forward references, so that you have to read ahead to know what he's talking about. Rocker arm geometry is treated quite well; Turkish is probably the only good source for this information. Of course it's completely obsolete with respect to analysis of lobe geometry discussing harmonic curves at length, but not polynomial curvers, and he never mentions jerk directly, just "smoothing the acceleration curve", but the basics are covered thoroughly. |
Two-Stroke Tuners Handbook by Gordon Jennings Paperback - 156 pages, 1973 The Source. If you ever read a motorcycle magazine in the '60s, '70s or '80s, then you know who and what Gordon Jennings was, The Top of the Heap. He wrote, and then published this book himself, and it's still the definitive reference 30 years after it's publication in 1973. (My copy has a light blue cover, same design as the red one to the left.) |

How to Build & Modify Chevrolet Small-Block V-8 Cylinder Heads by David Vizard List Price: US$19.95 Paperback - 159 pages (1991) MBI Publishing; ISBN: 0-87938-547-2 Ignore the "Chevrolet" in the title, this is a really great general resource. Vizard goes into great depth on every topic he covers; I've re-read some sections 2-3 times to flush out the subtleties. Widely acclaimed as being the best hands-on reference for flow bench testing and porting. |

The Illustrated Guide to Aerodynamics by H.C. "Skip" Smith List Price: US$39.95 Paperback - 337 pages (1992) Tab Books; ISBN: 0-8306-3901-2 Excellent freshman-level introduction to lift and drag. |
Classic Racing Engines by Karl Ludvigsen List Price: US$49.95 Hardcover - 192 pages, August 2001 Haynes Publishing, ISBN: 1-8596-0649-0 It says "technical" on the cover, but I don't think I'd go along with that. It is an excellent coffee table book with history and details that you won't find elsewhere, at least without a huge amount of work. Highly entertaining and highly recommended. |
Automotive Handbook by Robert Bosch List Price: US$34.95 Paperback - 852 pages 4th edition (June 1997) Robert Bentley; ISBN: 0837603331 If it has what you're looking for, it's great, but it isn't a complete compendium on all things automotive, and it does tend to have some esoterica that you'll probably never care about. |
